Saxon Math K Review

ASA,

I wanted to share with you my review on the Saxon Math K Curriculum.

Saxon math is well organized, structured and follows a consistent pattern.   This reinforces previously learned skills while learning new skills at the same time.

The kit comes with a teacher’s manual, meeting book, and 2 workbooks. You can purchase everything separately. You will also need a manipulatives kit.

The teacher’s manual guides you on everything you need. It tells you everything you will need for the upcoming lesson and anything you will need to have prepared. It is also a scripted so you know what to say. So if you have trouble explaining a topic it takes the pressure off because it tell you exactly what to say.

Everyday you will teach a lesson and your child will do some sort of activity with lesson. They will then have a worksheet to work on to reinforce what they have learned.

There are 112 lessons in this curriculum and it is designed to do 3 lessons a week and the other 2 days you will continue with the meeting book and if needed catch up on anything. This flexibility is nice so if something comes up or you need more time to work on a topic it is ok. And these lessons build on each other.

There are also assessments to give your child throughout the lessons. This helps you gauge your child so you can see where he is at with the material being taught.

There is also a meeting book which you will use daily where they will work on the date, counting, and patterns, etc.

As I mentioned above you will also need some math manipulatives for this curriculum. I purchased the set of manipulatives so I had everything I needed without having to scrounge around the internet looking for it all. They have it all for you in one kit. And this kit is used for grades K-3, so you only need to purchase it once.

Overall we like this curriculum. It thoroughly guides you in an organized way. It is scripted for you and it tells you ahead of time what you need to have ready for the next days lesson, so you can prepare well in advance what you need to have ready. I feel it is a fun and engaging curriculum and interactive because of the manipulatives.

I also want to point out if your child is grasping everything very well you can do multiple lessons in one day depending on what is being taught. I have done that with my kids.

Hope this was of benefit.

Peace & Blessings,
