Surat ‘Abasa Lapbook Templates

I have another fun surah lapbook to show you today. Surat Al-Infitaar! InshaAllah you and your children find it of benefit.

Basic Facts about Surat ‘Abasa:

  • This surah is number 80 in the Quran.
  • It was revealed in Mecca.
  • It gets its name from the word “abasa” which means he frowned and it is used in the first ayah.
  • This surah yells us that guidance has only one requirement-sincerity
  • It does not matter how rich or poor you are, if you are powerful or among the weak, young or old-what matters is you truly and sincerely want guidance.
  • This surah shows us that the prophets are humans and make mistakes

Prophets who have made mistakes:

  • Prophet Adam(AS) for eating from the forbidden tree(2:35-37)
  • Prophet Yunus(AS)for leaving the city Allah(SWT) sent him to guide the people(He left wothout Allah’s(SWT) permission.(37: 139-148)
  • Prophet Nuh(AS) who prayed to have his son saved from the flood even though he was a disbeliever(11:42-47)
  • Prophet Dawud(AS) who judged between two men without listening to both sides in fair manner(38:17-26)
  • Prophet Haroon(AS) did not stop bani Israel from worshipping the calk while his brother Prophet Musa(AS) was away at the mountain.(7:150)
  • Prophet Musa(AS) accidently killed a man when trying to protect one of his men.(28:15-17)

Story of Abdullah ibn Umm Makhtoom(RA)

Abdullah(RA) was a blind man and a sahaabah(companion) of the Prophet(SAAS). He was a major contributor to the Muslim community. His parents are Qays ibn Said and Aatikah bint Abdullah. He was a cousin of Khadija(RA) who was the first wife of Prophet Muhammad(SAAS).

Because Abdullah was born blind his mother was nicknamed Umm Makhtoom which means “Mother of the Concealed”. So that is how he got his name Abdullah ibn Umm Makhtoom.

The story is Abdullah(RA) went to see the Prophet(SAAS). The Prophet(SAAS) was in a meeting with some Meccan leaders. He(SAAS) was hoping these leaders would embrace Islam and would bring their people to Islam as well. Abdullah(RA), who interrupted the Prophet(SAAS) not knowing he was in a meeting, asked him to teach him what Allah(SWT) has taught him.

The Prophet(SAAS) did not respond but turned away and frowned. Abdullah(RA) repeated himself again not knowing he was interrupting.

Allah(SWT) revealed the first 16 ayahs of Surat ‘Abasa adn Prophet Muhammad(SAAS) left the leaders and went to attend to Abdullah, who was sincere in his desire to learn.

Abdullah’s many Accomplishments:

  • He was one of the first to accept Islam In Mecca in the beginning of Prophet Muhammad’s(SAAS) prophethood.
  • He was very eager to learn the Quran
  • He has 17 ayat in the Quran revealed about him. What an honor!
  • He was one of the first of two companions to do dawah and emigrate to Medina to teach about Islam
  • He was one of the first moo-adh-than(caller to prayer) along with Bilal(RA)
  • He was named deputy on 10 occasions when the Prophet(SAAS) had to leave the city
  • He participated in the Battle of Qadisiyah by being a flag bearer-which was an important job because holding up of the flag showed the army was still fighting
  • He became a martyr in this battle-Battle of Qadisiyah

Basic Surah Summary:

In this surah Allah (SWT) corrected the Prophet(SAAS) when he turned away from the blind man(Abdullah(RA)). Allah(SWT) said that this man was more of a sincere believer and wanted to learn more and grow in faith.

The leaders the Prophet(SAAS) was speaking to were not sincere in learning about Islam. They thought they did not need Allah(SWT).

We should always help those who are sincere in asking questions about Islam. They may want to learn what the Quran has to say and in turn this may bring them closer to Allah(SWT).

Allah(SWT) tells us in ayat 13-16, that the Quran is a very important book, it is recorded in honored sheets, it is holy and pure and protected by the angels. These angels are noble and dutiful. In ayah 15 it tells us the special name of these angels, Sa-fa-rah. This word means ambassador. You could be among these ambassador angels if we recite the Quran.

Hadith: The Prophet(SAAS) said, “He who recites the Quran very well will be with the noble, righteous, ambassador angels, and the one who recites with difficulty will receive two rewards. (Bukhari & Muslim) So it is best if we can recite it beautifully to be among these angels.

Allah(SWT) also reminds us in this surah how we were born and how we will die and be resurrected on Yawm Al-Qiyamah. He(SWT) continues to remind us to complete the work that He has created us for, what we should be doing for Him. He(SWT) has reminded us of all the blessings He(SWT) has given us like food, rain and livestock.

He(SWT) then tells us about a deafening blast will come about suddenly signaling that Yawm Al-Qiyamah as come. It will be so loud that everything in the universe will stop. This blast is called As-saa-khah. This day will come as a total surprise.

Allah(SWT) tells us what Yawm Al-Qiyamah will be like. Everyone will be so afraid that no one will matter to them. Not your wife, husband, mother, father, or children. No one. Everyone will be naked but no one will care because they are so scared of what will happen to them.

Some people will get the good news of Jannah and their faces will be bright that day. But the rest will have dark faces because they lived a sinful life. They will be asking for help but no one will help them.

The ages for these lapbooks:

This lapbook can be used alongside the Ad-Duha Institute Mini Tafseer Books (but any book can be used).  They are a wondeful series of books for young children. I recommend you check out their website. You can purchase the Surat Al-Infitaar mini-book or the Surat Al-Infitaar e-book.   Be sure to click the correct book format when purchasing.  You can buy each book separately or as a set.  Check out the pages of the books here.  I gave a book to each child so that they can color and participate by reading along with me.

These lapbooks can be used for level grades, I would say from maybe 4th-6/7 depending on the age of your child/student and what they are able to do.  If your child/students are on the younger side you can just choose the basic minibooks about the surah and make a smaller lapbook. And then as they get older you can incorporate more minibooks about the surah that can then be added to their lapbook.

If you have older students you can have them read and do the minibook themselves.  They can either cut and paste the answers into the mini books or they can write it in themselves.  You can give them a quiz after a review to see if they have fully understood and retained the information.  I will be sharing a study guide and quiz later so be sure to keep a look out.

If you have younger readers you can read it together as a group and then you can help them cut and paste the answers inside the mini books.  The very young may not be able to do all the mini books.  You can pick and choose which ones you would like your students to do.  Another option is for the parent/teacher to cut out all mini books and paste them into the lapbook so it is ready for the younger student to use.  Then the student can paste the answer inside the minibook. This way the parent or teacher can focus on spending time going over and explaining the surah.

If this is too easy for your older students then you can soon check out my Surat Al-Infitaar Notebooking Pages where students/adults can write out what they know and learned from the surah.

I will be coming out with a new series of surah lapbooks for Pre-k through maybe 2nd to 3rd grade. It will be a simplified version of my lapbooks, but it will give them exposure to the basic facts about the surah so they can learn along with their siblings or students. So be sure to keep a look out. I will post it on Instagram when they are ready to be released, so be sure to follow me so you do not miss out on any new content!

How long will it take to complete this lapbook?

It all depends on you and your family.  Older students might finish in a few days to a week and younger students may take a couple of weeks or more.  Do not feel pressured to finish in a certain time.  Pace yourself and your kids to what best suits your family.

What is included in this lapbook?

  • Facts about the surah mini books
  • Vocabulary mini book
  • Trace the arabic letters of the surah
  • Tafseer mini book
  • Translation mini book

In the above photo, because the surahs are starting to get a bit longer, I have made this option for you if you decide not to use the minibooks inside the lapbook. You can use this option and just staple each packet together and place in the back pocket of the lapbook. Check out my Surat ‘Abasa lapbook to see how this is shown.
