Surat Al-Humazah Lapbook

I have another fun lapbook to show you all today!  Surat Al-Humazah Lapbook!  InshaAllah you and your family find it if benefit.

Surah Summary:

This is a Meccan Surah and it condemns all sorts of backbiting, slander and mockery.  It also talks about those who gather and hoard their wealth.  These people who are arrogant and selfish enjoy talking and mimicking other people.

This surah begins with a stern warning.  “Woe to every backbiter, slanderer!”  Allah is talking to those who hurt people with their speech in front of them or behind their backs.  This is one of the big sins that Allah(SWT) hates.  He dislikes this sin so much that he revealed this surah to warn us not to do it.  It is the first sin that Allah mentions in this surah.  Allah tells us that people who do it are in for a major punishment.  It is an easy sin to do and you may think it is very small but it is one of the ugliest and biggest sins one can do.  There are lots of ways to talk about others but we can put them in three groups.  Mockery, backbiting, and slander.

Mockery is making fun of a person using your hands and/or your eyes.  If you roll your eyes or wink at a friend to let them know that you are making fun of that person.   Or if you use your hands to make fun of someone that is also considered mockery.  One should ask themselves  how would that make you feel if that was done to you or a loved one.

Backbiting is to talk about someone when they are not around… behind their backs.  Most people do not mean to backbite but sometimes when they are with others it seems more fascinating to add more details about the person.  And because people respond by laughing or adding their own two cents it is easy to get lost in the midst of it all.  Even if you do not mention the person’s name, but you are implying a certain person by how you describe them, it is still a great sin.

Slander is when you something about someone that is not true in order to make them look bad.  When one spreads rumors about others that is another form of slander.  We all must make a conscience effort not to fall into these bad sins.

Basically, from the point of Islam, the honour of people is considered highly

respectable, hence, anything that causes them to be insulted is a great sin.

These sins are so bad that Allah(SWT) tells us in the Quran that it is like “eating dead flesh”  (49:12)

In the Ad-Duha book they give 10 tips on how to help keep us from falling into sin.  The book also mentions ways in some circumstances where you can talk about others.  For example if there is someone who is dangerous in the community, you would want to warn others.  The book also mention four ways one can be forgiven for talking about or making fun of others.  For example, you should ask Allah(SWT) for forgiveness and to ask the person you harmed for forgiveness.

The second sin Allah(SWT) talks about in this surah is miserliness.  Miserliness is hoarding your wealth and not sharing it with others.  They obtain their wealth in lawful or unlawful ways.  Misers do not think well of others and think that others are not smart with their wealth.  They talk about others and think they do not work as hard as they do.  A combination of these two sins is terrible.

Allah tells us in this surah that the miser is continuously counting their wealth and think his wealth will make them live forever.  But their money does not stop them from dying, everyone will return back to Allah(SWT).

Allah tells us in this surah what will happen to those people who mock, backbite and slander.  Allah tells us these people will be punished in Al-Hutamah.  He goes on to further explain to us what hutamah is.  It tells us four things about hutamah.

  • It is a fire that Allah(SWT) has made as a punishment for those who talk and make fun of others.
  • It is a fire that will rise up over them again and again.
  • Al-Hutamah will be completely closed.  There is no way to escape.
  • It has four, strong, very large columns that keep the backbiters, mockers, slanderers and misers inside.

This surah was sent to us as a warning so we should be mindful of our actions.

The ages for these lapbooks

This lapbook is meant to be used with the Ad-Duha Institute Mini Tafseer Books.  You can purchase the Surat Al-Humazah mini book or you can purchase the Surat Al-Humazah e-book and print it out yourself.  You can buy each book separately or as a set.  Check out the pages of the books here.  I gave a book to each child so that they can color and participate by reading along with me.

These lapbooks can be used at the elementary level grades 1-6.  If you have older students you can have them read and do the minbook themselves.  They can either cut and paste the answers into the mini books or they can write it in themselves.  You can give them a quiz after a review to see if they have fully understood and retained the information.  I will be sharing a study guide and quiz later so be sure to keep a look out.

If you have younger readers you can read it together as a group and then you can help them cut and paste the answers inside the mini books.  The very young may not be able to do all the mini books.  You can pick and choose which ones you would like your students to do.  Another option is for the parent/teacher to cut out all mini books and paste them into the lapbook so it is ready for the younger student to use.  Then the parent or teacher can focus on spending time going over and explaining the surah.

If this is too easy for your older students then you can soon check out my Surat Al-Humazah Notebooking Pages where they can write out what they know and learned from the surah.  Keep a look out.

How long will it take to complete this lapbook?

It all depends on you and your family.  Older students might finish in a few days to a week and younger students may take a couple of weeks or more.  Do not feel pressured to finish in a certain time.  Pace yourself and your kids to what best suits your family.
