Surat Al-Layl Lapbook

ASA Everyone,

Today I wanted to show you all my Surat Al-Layl Lapbook. InshaAllah you and your children find it of benefit.

Basic Facts About Surat Al-Layl:

This surah is number 92 in the Quran.  It was revealed in Mecca.  It gets its name from the word “Al-Layl” which means the night.  This word is used in the first ayah.  This surah talks about one if the most famous sahaba, Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq(RA).

Surah Summary:

This surah is about Qadr and about two groups of people. The pious good people who do good, give in charity and fear Allah. And those who are greedy and think themselves in no need of Allah, thinking they are self-sufficient. Those who do good are told they will be given Jannah(Paradise) and those who do bad things will be given Jahannam(Hell).

Special Story about Surat Al-Layl:

The Prophet(SAAS) recommended reciting this surah in ‘Isha Prayer because it not too long or too short.

This story is narrated by Jaabir(RA) who said there was a man with two camels and night had fallen. He came across Mu’aadh Ibn Jabal(RA) ( a famous sahaba and one of the best recitors at that time) who was praying ‘Isha and joined him in prayer. Mu’aadh was reciting Surat Al-Baqarah or Surat An-Nisa(both very long surahs) and the man had left the prayer because he had been working all day and was too tired to stand for too long.

When this man found out the Mu’aadh criticized him for leaving in the middle of prayer he went and complained to the Prophet(SAAS). The Prophet(SAAS) said, “O Mu’aadh! Are you putting the people on trial? It would have been better if you had recited Sabbi-his-ma rab-bee-kal-a’alaa(Surat Al-‘Alaa), Wash-sham-se wad-doo-ha-ha(Surat Ash-Shams), or wal-lay-lee ee-dha yagh-sha(Surat Al-Layl), for the old, the weak and the needy pray behind you. He said this three times. (Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).

Asbaab An-Nazool(the story behind the revelation)

This surah was not revealed at once, rather it was revealed in parts and some of these parts are related to Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq(RA).

Abu Bakr loved to do good things and one thing he loved doing was to free slaves, especially elderly, females and those who accepted Islam.

His father, Abu Quhafah, asked his son why he was buying and then freeing these slaves. His father thought this did not benefit Abu Bakr at all.

He told his father that he had his reasons for doing this but in his heart he did it ti get closer to Allah(SWT). Some scholars say that is why ayahs 17 & 18 of this surah were revealed. In these ayat it is confirmed that good people do good things to please Allah(SWT).

Verse 19 until the end of the surah is about someone else Abu Bakr had freed and would become one of the most well known Muslims in history.

Bilal Ibn Rabah(RA)

The Prophet(SAAS) had walked by a group of men beating on an Ethiopian slave. This slave belonged to one of the most wealthiest men in Mecca, Abdullah Ibn Jud’aan.

The slave’s name was Bilal Ibn Rabah(RA). He would later become one the first Mu’adhthin(caller of the adthaan) in Islam.

He was being punished because he had dishonored the gods of the Quraysh. During his beating he kept repeating “There is no God but Allah”. He also had became Muslim without his master’s permission.

The Prophet(SAAS) told Abu Bakr(RA) what was happening and he immediately took gold to buy Bilal(RA). These men gladly took the gold and began telling everyone that Bilal(RA) owed Abu Bakr(RA) money. This was not true.

Surat Al-Layl was revealed to let everyone know that people who do good, do it to please Allah(SWT) alone and do not want any reward from anyone.

This lapbook is meant to be used with the Ad-Duha Institute Mini Tafseer Books.  You can purchase the Surat Al-Layl mini book or the Surat Al-Layl e-book.   Be sure to click the correct book format when purchasing.  You can buy each book separately or as a set.  Check out the pages of the books here.  I gave a book to each child so that they can color and participate by reading along with me.

These lapbooks can be used at the elementary level grades 1-6.  If you have older students you can have them read and do the minibook themselves.  They can either cut and paste the answers into the mini books or they can write it in themselves.  You can give them a quiz after a review to see if they have fully understood and retained the information.  I will be sharing a study guide and quiz later so be sure to keep a look out.

If you have younger readers you can read it together as a group and then you can help them cut and paste the answers inside the mini books.  The very young may not be able to do all the mini books.  You can pick and choose which ones you would like your students to do.  Another option is for the parent/teacher to cut out all mini books and paste them into the lapbook so it is ready for the younger student to use.  Then the parent or teacher can focus on spending time going over and explaining the surah.

If this is too easy for your older students then you can soon check out my Surat Ash-Sharh Notebooking Pages where they can write out what they know and learned from the surah.
