Surat Ash-Shams Lapbook

I have another fun lapbook to share with you today. Surat Ash-Shams Lapbook.  InshaAllah you and your children find it of benefit.

Basic Facts about Surat Ash-Shams:

This surah is number 91 in the Quran.  It was revealed in Mecca.  It is called a “Makki” surah meaning it was revealed in the beginning of his prophethood before the Hijrah.  It gets its name from the first ayah, the word Ash-Shams meaning The Sun. This surah teaches us that if we do good deeds we will be successful in this life and the next.  If we decide to do bad deeds we will fail in this life and the next. FYI-The Madini surahs were revealed later in his Prophethood, and those surahs are usually longer in length and are about law and society.

Minibooks on the basic facts of the surah.

Surah Summary:

This surah is special in the fact that the Prophet(SAAS) recommended reciting in Isha prayer because it was not long nor too short. The following story explains why. He also recommended this for Surat Al-Layl as well.

Special Story about Surat Ash-Shams:

The Prophet(SAAS) recommended reciting this surah in ‘Isha Prayer because it not too long or too short.

This story is narrated by Jaabir(RA) who said there was a man with two camels and night had fallen. He came across Mu’aadh Ibn Jabal(RA) ( a famous sahaba and one of the best recitors at that time) who was praying ‘Isha and joined him in prayer. Mu’aadh was reciting Surat Al-Baqarah or Surat An-Nisa(both very long surahs) and the man had left the prayer because he had been working all day and was too tired to stand for too long.

When this man found out the Mu’aadh criticized him for leaving in the middle of prayer he went and complained to the Prophet(SAAS). The Prophet(SAAS) said, “O Mu’aadh! Are you putting the people on trial? It would have been better if you had recited Sabbi-his-ma rab-bee-kal-a’alaa(Surat Al-‘Alaa), Wash-sham-se wad-doo-ha-ha(Surat Ash-Shams), or wal-lay-lee ee-dha yagh-sha(Surat Al-Layl), for the old, the weak and the needy pray behind you. He said this three times. (Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).

Another reason this surah is special is because the Prophet(SAAS) would recite a dua’ after ayah 8.

This is an excellent dua’ to memorize and recite.

The ages for these lapbooks:

This lapbook is meant to be used with the Ad-Duha Institute Mini Tafseer Books.  You can purchase the Surat Ash-Shams mini book or the Surat Ash-Shams e-book.   Be sure to click the correct book format when purchasing.  You can buy each book separately or as a set.  Check out the pages of the books here.  I gave a book to each child so that they can color and participate by reading along with me.

These lapbooks can be used at the elementary level grades 1-5.  If you have older students you can have them read and do the minibook themselves.  They can either cut and paste the answers into the mini books or they can write it in themselves.  You can give them a quiz after a review to see if they have fully understood and retained the information.  I will be sharing a study guide and quiz later so be sure to keep a look out.

If you have younger readers you can read it together as a group and then you can help them cut and paste the answers inside the mini books.  The very young may not be able to do all the mini books.  You can pick and choose which ones you would like your students to do.  Another option is for the parent/teacher to cut out all mini books and paste them into the lapbook so it is ready for the younger student to use.  Then the student can paste the answer inside the minibook. This way the parent or teacher can focus on spending time going over and explaining the surah.

If this is too easy for your older students then you can soon check out my Surat Ash-Shams Notebooking Pages where they can write out what they know and learned from the surah.

How long will it take to complete this lapbook?

It all depends on you and your family.  Older students might finish in a few days to a week and younger students may take a couple of weeks or more.  Do not feel pressured to finish in a certain time.  Pace yourself and your kids to what best suits your family.
