Basic Facts of the Surah

Surat Az-Zalzalah is surah number 99 in the Quran.  This surah was revealed in Mecca.  It gets its name from the first ayah from the words Zoolzalah and Zilzal.  Both these words come from the same root which means to shake violently as in an earthquake.  This surah is sometimes called Surat Az-Zilzal. 

This surah is about things that will happen on Yawm Al-Qiyamah like the terrible shaking of the earth and all deeds will be counted for, no matter how small they are.

Special thing about this surah

This is one of the 9 suwar in the Quran named after Yawm Al-Qiyamah or things that will happen on that day.

The nine suwar are:

• Surat Al-Waaqi’ah (The Event)
• Surat Al-Haaqqah (The Reality)
• Surat Al-Qiyamah (The Rising of the Dead)
• Surat Al-Takweer (The Overthrowing)
• Surat Al-Infitaar (The Cleaving)
• Surat Al-Inshiqaaq (The Sundering)
• Surat Al-Ghashiyah (The Overwhelming Event)
• Surat Az-Zalzalah (The Earthquake)
• Surat Al-Qaari’ah (The Calamity)

Asbaab An-Nazool(Story behind the surah)

1. The story behind this surah is about two men who thought the little things are not important.
2. The story is the first man thought that doing a small good deed would not be rewarded. Like giving a poor man a date.  The second man thought that doing a small bad deed would not be punished.  Like saying a bad word or looking at something haram.  They were both wrong and Allah revealed this surah to teach us that little things count, both good and bad.

What will be thrown out of the earth?

• Valuable Gemstones(Like diamonds, emeralds and rubies
• Precious metals(like gold, silver and platinum)
• Resurrected Creatures(like human beings and animals who had died and been buried.
• Other things that Allah only knows about.

The people will ask “What is wrong with the earth?” and they will be very scared because they do not know what is happening. The earth will tell Allah everything we did on this earth.

That day people will be put into groups according to their deeds, good or bad.  Allah tells us in this surah that even an atom’s weight of good or bad will be counted, no matter how small.
