Kefta Patties w/ onion & tomato sauce

Today I have a variation of the traditional kefta recipe to share with you. This is cooked on the stove top and is an easy weeknight meal to put together. If you like kefta, you’ll love this.

First thing you want to do is put the onion, parsley and spices in a food processor. I used a mini processor since it isn’t a large amount.

This is the 7 spice jar you can find at any Middle Eastern Market.

Next, you want to add that mixture to the ground beef and mix. Do not work it too much because it will come out a bit tough. Once mixed shape into patties and put aside. This will make about 12-15 patties depending on the size.

Next you want to start on the sauce. Slice a medium onion. You also need a 15oz. can of crushed tomatoes or homemade jarred tomatoes. Saute onion with a bit of olive oil or butter until translucent. Then add crushed tomatoes along with salt, pepper and a bit of sugar to help with the acidity.

Next, you want to slice about 5 golden potatoes (or whatever you have on hand) and place them on top of the tomatoes. Then add the kefta patties on top of the sliced potatoes. Cover and cook for about 20 minutes until potatoes are tender and kefta is cooked.

Once is it done, serve and enjoy! This is delicious to serve along with rice and a salad. In the photo, it is served with fatoosh.

Hope you enjoy this dish!

Recipe

Kefta:

1 lb. ground beef

1/2 medium onion

Small handful of parsley

1 Tbsp. 7 spice

1 tsp. himalayan salt*

1/4 tsp. black pepper

2 Tbsp. oil (olive, avocado or vegetable)

2 potatoes – sliced

Sauce

1 medium onion-sliced

1 15 oz can crushed tomatoes or small jar of homemade jarred tomatoes

1 tsp. sugar

1 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. black pepper

You start with the Kefta patties. First thing you do is to place the onion, parsley, 7 spice, salt and pepper in a food processor.**(I used a mini processor) Place ground beef in a bowl along with the mixture from the food processor and the 2 Tbsp. oil.

Mix all the ingredients together. Do not work it too much because it will come out a bit tough. Once mixed shape into patties and put aside. This will make about 12-15 patties depending on the size. Set them aside.

Next you want to start on the sauce. Slice a medium onion. Saute onion with a bit of olive oil or butter until translucent. Then add crushed tomatoes along with salt, pepper and a bit of sugar to help with the acidity. Stir and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.

Next, you want to slice about 5 golden potatoes (or whatever you have on hand***) and place them on top of the tomatoes. Then add the kefta patties on top of the sliced potatoes. Cover and cook for about 20 minutes until potatoes are tender and kefta is cooked

Note: * I use Himilayan salt. If you use the standard table salt you will need a bit less. Adjust seasoning to your liking.

** You can also chop all this by hand. If you do, be sure to mix the spices with the parsley and onion first before adding it to the beef.

*** If you use russet potatoes you will only need about two because they are larger.
