Surat Al-'Alaq Lapbook Templates

alaq lp cover-bn

I have another fun lapbook to show you today.  Surat Al-‘Alaq Lapbook.  InshaAllah you and your children find it of benefit.  Some parts of this lapbook  may be too difficult for the younger kids.  You can pick and choose according to your child’s level.

Surat Al-‘Alaq is surah number 96 in the Quran.  It was revealed in Mecca.  The first five ayat of this surah are the first ayat of the Quran revealed to Prophet Muhammad(SAAS).

Surah Summary:

This surah is a very special surah because it the first five ayat of this surah were the first to ever be revealed of the Quran.  This surah is about being thankful for all the blessings and knowledge Allah has bestowed upon us by listening to Him.

Another reason this surah is special is because it has Sujood At-Tilaawah, which is a prostration you make when you see it in the Quran.  It is marked by an arch shaped symbol.  This sujood is mus-ts-hab which means highly recommended.  It is not wa-jib which is mandatory.

There is  a dua one should make when he makes this sujood.

سَجَدَ وَجْهِي لِلَّذِي خَلَقَهُ، وَشَقَّ سَمْعَهُ وَبَصَرَهُ، بِحَوْلِهِ وَقُوَّتِهِ

My face fell prostrate before He who created it and brought forth its faculties of hearing and seeing by His might and power.

Asbaab An-Nazool:(story behind the surah)

The first five ayat are the very first ayat to be revealed of the Quran.  It was in the month of Ramadan when Allah(SWT) was going to tell Rasulallah(SAAS) that he was a Prophet(SAAS).  He was on a trip on the desert which he often did  so he could be alone to think about Allah.

The Prophet was sitting in a cave called Ghaar Hira at the top of Jabal An-Noor(Mountain of Light) when Angel Gibreel was told to go to the Prophet.  When  he came to the Prophet he squeezed him very tightly and told him to read.  Rasulullah told him he could not read.  Angel Gibreel did the same thing and again Rasulullah responded in the same way.  Angel Gibreel did it a third time and this time Rasulullah asked him “What should I read?”

Angel Gibreel taught him the first five ayat of this surah.  These five ayat reveal five important things:

  1. Allah created us so we must listen to Him.
  2. He created us from a bit of blood.
  3. He has taught us things we need to know.
  4. He has taught us to read and write
  5. He has honored human beings by giving us this knowledge

The rest of the surah was revealed at a later time.  People were still ungrateful.  People think they do not need Allah, but what they are not realizing is that all they have is from Allah.  They forget that they will be going back to Allah on Yawm Al-Qiyaamah and have to answer for everything.

The second part of this surah was revealed about a man named Abu Jahl Ibn Hishaam.  He was a wealthy man and an important man in Mecca.  Abu Jahl hated Muslims and Islam.  He wanted to get rid of the Prophet(SAAS) and Islam.  He told his friends that if the Prophet tried to pray at the Kabah he would stomp on his neck.  Upon hearing this the Prophet(SAAS) said the angels would seize him.

One day the Prophet(SAAS) went to pray at the Kabah while Abu Jahl was there.  His friends wanted to see if he would do as he promised.  When Abu Jahl went to attack the Prophet he turned away in fear.  His friends had asked what had happened and he told them he saw a pit of fire.  The Prophet(SAAS) said if had tried to do anything the angels would have seized him at that very moment.  These angels are called Az-Zabaaneeyahl, the angels of Jahannam(Hell).

The ages for these lapbooks:

This lapbook is meant to be used with the Ad-Duha Institute Mini Tafseer Books.  You can purchase the Surat Al-‘Alaq mini book or the Surat Al-‘Alaq e-book.   Be sure to click the correct book format when purchasing.  You can buy each book separately or as a set.  Check out the pages of the books here.  I gave a book to each child so that they can color and participate by reading along with me.

These lapbooks can be used at the elementary level grades 1-6.  If you have older students you can have them read and do the minibook themselves.  They can either cut and paste the answers into the mini books or they can write it in themselves.  You can give them a quiz after a review to see if they have fully understood and retained the information.  I will be sharing a study guide and quiz later so be sure to keep a look out.

If you have younger readers you can read it together as a group and then you can help them cut and paste the answers inside the mini books.  The very young may not be able to do all the mini books.  You can pick and choose which ones you would like your students to do.  Another option is for the parent/teacher to cut out all mini books and paste them into the lapbook so it is ready for the younger student to use.  Then the parent or teacher can focus on spending time going over and explaining the surah.

If this is too easy for your older students then you can soon check out my Surat Al-‘Alaq Notebooking Pages where they can write out what they know and learned from the surah.

How long will it take to complete this lapbook?

It all depends on you and your family.  Older students might finish in a few days to a week and younger students may take a couple of weeks or more.  Do not feel pressured to finish in a certain time.  Pace yourself and your kids to what best suits your family.
